GearJoT launches UK fleet platform after Stevens pilot

GearJoT has partnered with Stevens Equipment Rental to launch its fleet management platform in the UK construction market, following a three-year pilot with the plant hire company.

The software provider is targeting contractors, rental businesses and equipment dealers managing mixed fleets in construction and materials extraction. Its wider UK launch follows Stevens Equipment Rental's use of the system to test and refine its functions in day-to-day operations.

As its fleet and operating footprint grew, Stevens Equipment Rental needed a single asset management system. Existing systems, it found, were often geared towards finance or sales, with limited support for maintenance activity across a machine's life.

GearJoT was developed by founder David Macfarlan, whose background in used equipment sales shaped the product's focus on maintenance records. Buyers in the secondary market regularly wanted full documentation before committing to a purchase, he said, which informed the platform's design.

"Every time I spoke with a customer looking to buy a used machine, they would say, 'we need the records. We want to see the maintenance history'," said David Macfarlan, founder, GearJoT.

"So GearJoT was designed to provide the complete maintenance and service history for every asset."

Pilot phase

During the pilot, Stevens Equipment Rental acted as an early user and provided operational feedback from a live plant hire environment. The process helped shape the software into a product aimed at companies operating fleets in construction and extraction.

Macfarlan said the rental company's standards were central to the development work. "SER has a meticulous maintenance culture, which aligns perfectly with what we were trying to achieve.

"If GearJoT could meet the standards of their team, we knew it would work for any operator, and we're grateful for their input."

Changes made during the trial included a mobile app for engineers updating inspections and tasks in the field. The system was also adapted so users could share inspection reports containing photos and videos with customers and manufacturers, while telematics data from different equipment brands could be viewed in one place.

For rental businesses with fleets spanning multiple manufacturers, that consolidation addresses a practical problem. Instead of switching between separate telematics systems, staff can monitor location and machine condition through a single interface.

David Grace, plant manager at Stevens Equipment Rental, said this had changed how the company tracks and maintains equipment. "Previously, we would have different telematics platforms open for all the equipment brands in our fleet.

"Now in GearJoT we can see the location and health of all our machines at a glance and be more proactive in our maintenance. It makes it much easier to fix small issues at a convenient moment - often before the operator is even aware of them - before they turn into more serious problems that lead to unplanned downtime."

Across the business

The platform is now used across Stevens Equipment Rental's wider business, not only by engineering or workshop staff. Service coordinators, hire desk employees, sales teams and finance teams all use the system, reflecting plant rental businesses' growing need for shared access to machine data.

That broader adoption points to a shift in how fleet information is handled. Maintenance history, inspection reports and asset tracking are no longer confined to back-office records, but are used in customer communication, internal planning and resale preparation.

Grace said the software had become embedded in the company's routine work. "GearJoT has become part of our world.

"It helps us collaborate across teams, track every machine, provide clear, professional information to our customers, and ensure the highest levels of service."

Wider rollout

The UK launch also forms part of GearJoT's broader expansion across Europe and North America. The company is using the Stevens Equipment Rental pilot as a reference point for how the platform performs in live fleet management across heavy equipment operations.

Stevens Equipment Rental, founded in 1975, operates in construction, quarrying, waste and recycling, power generation and infrastructure. The family-run company is based in Cumbria and also has depots in Kettering, Glasgow and Dundee, giving GearJoT a test case spanning multiple sites and a varied fleet mix.

Macfarlan said working with the rental company gave the software provider insight into how fleet management functions in practice. "Working with a high-quality operator such as SER allowed us to see exactly how all aspects of fleet management work on the ground.

"Their feedback on inspections, task handling and data consolidation was invaluable, and it ensures that GearJoT is a platform that genuinely works for users across mining and construction."
